Orlando Science Center Offers a Fun Departure from Theme Parks

The Orlando Science Center has been inspiring, delighting, and teaching visitors of all ages. The OSC features four floors of exhibits and big-screen movies. Though it could never replace the fabulous theme parks in Orlando, it certainly offers a plethora of activities to do on a non-theme park day. Current exhibits include:

• Diabetes—A Deeper Look: This exhibit offers a three dimensional experience designed to help visitors look at this disease in a new and unique way.
• If a Starfish Can Grow a New Arm, Why Can’t I?
• Frogs!
• Careers for Life

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit at Universal Orlando

The Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit roller coaster burst onto the scene at Universal Studios Orlando nearly a year ago—this is the attraction where you can choose your own song to be played as you ride the coaster. Riders hear their own song Universal has released a list of the most popular songs chosen, and here’s the top five:

1. “Stronger” by Kanye West
2. “Pump It” by Black Eyed Peas
3. “Rollin’ ” by Limp Bizkit
4. “Bring Me to Life” by Evanescence
5. “Glamorous” by Fergie

Entertainment at Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Sure, you’ve heard lots about the rides and attractions Wizarding World of Harry Potter area at Universal Orlando, but what you may not realize is that there’s plenty of entertainment there as well.

There’s a Twiward Rally show adapted from the film “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” featuring the girls from the Beauxbatons Academy wearing their bright blue dresses and hats while doing dances with twirling ribbons. The rally also features the boys from the Durmstrung Institute who perform acrobatics.

Cuteness Overload at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay

Question: What’s cuter than a baby giraffe? Answer: Two baby giraffes. Don’t believe it? Well, head on over to Busch Gardens for the chance to see the latest additions to the family—two new baby giraffes.

These two new bundles of joy were born in April. The baby boys are half-siblings, with Sterling being daddy to both babies. Baby mamas are Chloe and Tesa. Babies and mamas were kept away from the public eye until last week in order to monitor their growth and temperament, and now they can be seen roaming the Serengeti with the rest of the giraffes.

Become a Disney Imagineer

Quick—list your dream jobs. If you’re like a lot of people, “Disney Imagineer” is somewhere on that list. You know, the folks that dream up all the stuff that makes Disney so darn cool. In conjunction with the new Disney flick “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” Disney is running a contest. The winner will get to be an Imagineer’s apprentice for the day. The grand prize also includes a two-night trip to Disneyland for four people and three-day park-hopper tickets.

Pamper Your Pooch or Kitty at Disney

The next time you go to Walt Disney World Resort after August 27, don’t worry about finding a pet sitter for Fluffy or Fido. Disney World is opening a new kennel, Best Friends Pet Care Resort, and it will replace other kennels at Disney.

Orlando Theme Parks Rush to Save Sea Turtles

SeaWorld Orlando and Epcot at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando are pitching in with the animal rescue efforts launched as a result of the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico. Eleven very sick Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles were flown into Orlando via twin engine plane Friday. They were being treated for pneumonia at Marine Mammal Studies in Gulfport, Mississippi, but there are so many other animals that need to be treated at the Gulfport facility, SeaWorld and Epcot’s The Seas facility offered to take in the turtles and nurse them back to health.

It Really is a Small World

When Alex and Donna Voutsinas were looking through childhood photographs in preparation for their wedding, Alex noticed something interesting. In a photograph taken of Donna at Disney World when she was a child, he spotted someone familiar in the background--himself. As Donna and her brothers pose with a Disney character in the foreground, there's a man pushing a stroller in the background. Alex recognized the man in the background as his dad!

Gay Days Celebrates 20 Years in Orlando

Gay Days hits the Magic Kingdom again this year, leaving the park awash in red. Gay Days organizers are planning on about 150,000 people attending, and Gay Day revelers will be wearing their red shirts in a sign of unity.

Star Tours Undergoes Facelift

For many Star Wars and Disney fans, the bad news is that the Star Tours ride at Disney World Resort’s Hollywood Studios is being decommissioned in October 2010. The good news is that the ride is being updated and the new ride, Star Tours II, will be unveiled in 2011.
