Disney Reveals Plans for Former Pleasure Island Site

As reported earlier this year, Disney World has closed the nightlife/adult complex Pleasure Island and is building a new area in its place. Replacing the nightclubs will be a new area called “Hyperion Wharf.” All the nightclubs will be torn down and the new theme of the area will be early 1900s “seaport village” and amusement area. Part of Pleasure Island’s problem is that the attractions were only open at night. Hyperion Wharf will be open during the day and at night. Disney has acquiesced to the idea that lots of people come to Disney as a family and they are making the new area more pleasing for all ages, not just adults—though there will be plenty of attractions in the area which Disney hopes will draw in adult visitors. The name Hyperion comes from the name for the Greek god of light, and indeed lighting is a major component of the area. Hyperion, incidentally, was the name of the street where Walt Disney’s first major animation studio was located. Perhaps the best news is that Disney has reported the new area will create up to 1,200 new jobs.

“Hyperion Wharf will offer guests of all ages a vibrant atmosphere and new experiences that can be enjoyed by day or by night,” Downtown Disney vice president Keith Bradford explained. “Whether looking for a great place to dine with the whole family or a place to relax and enjoy live music, Hyperion Wharf will provide the perfect setting for guests to make new memories with us.”

Construction is slated to begin immediately and the area will be totally complete sometime in 2013.
