Hyperion Wharf Pause in Construction
Hyperion Wharf Pause in Construction
Construction of Disney World’s new and improved Fantasyland is full steam ahead, but another revamp and reconstruction of a Disney World property has stalled. Disney’s Hyperion Wharf area is being built in the area which once housed Pleasure Island. Pleasure Island was an adult-centric venue with nightclubs, restaurants, bars, etc. Most of the nightclubs and other adult venues were shuttered in 2008, and plans for Hyperion Wharf were announced at the end of 2010. The new area will be a seaside-themed shopping and dining area more inviting to guests of all ages. Earlier this spring, construction began on Hyperion Wharf, though some observers have said it looks more like a tear-down.
Now, Disney has announced they will be pausing work on Hyperion Wharf as they reevaluate their building plans. A spokesperson said via the Disney company blog, "During the course of this site work, we identified opportunities to further refine our master plan and are pausing to evaluate them…While we're moving quickly, it will admittedly cause a delay in construction. But we're willing to bet that any delay will be worth the wait once we're able to share details about the exciting work we've been doing."
No word on when the Hyperion Wharf project will be ready for guests to enjoy. An amphitheater and park were supposed to be done during the next month or so, with completion of the entire project by 2013, and we’ll keep you updated if this changes.
The Orlando Sentinel did make mention of the fact that a bowling alley is going up in the Downtown Disney area. It will be called Splitsville and will include a 50,000 square-foot bowling alley, billiards, dining, music, and more.
